THE MANUFACTURING CENTRE, COVENTRY

The dinner will be held at The Manufacturing Centre, where delegates will be invited to take a guided tour of the facility before sitting down to a three-course meal and discussion chaired by Dr Douglas Dawson.

Dr Dawson is a prominent British business leader with a 30-year track record of achievement and success within the UK and international engineering, manufacturing and industrial sectors.

Currently, Chief Executive of Liberty Industries Group, he is also a member of the Strategic Board of the $26bn a year GFG ( Gupta Family Group ) Alliance, a fast-growing global enterprise which includes the Liberty House, Alvance and SIMEC groups; encompassing industrial, energy, shipping and commodities activities across 30 countries.

A native of Glasgow, Dr Dawson, who graduated in mechanical engineering from Glasgow Caledonian University in 1982, began his career as Naval Engineering Officer reaching the rank of Chief Engineer, Class 1 at the young age of 26 before moving on to take up senior management roles with BTR Industries, a diversified UK based global industrial conglomerate.

Since then he has distinguished himself in a number of high-profile international roles. These included working with a large US investment bank specialising in industrial investments and being involved with SPX Corporation as MD for Europe & Asia, leading a major expansion of the US-owned capital equipment manufacturer across these territories. He subsequently founded Flow System Technologies which designed, manufactured and distributed highly-engineered capital equipment and delivered associated engineering services for the marine, automotive, power generation and other industries. He grew this into a $60m a year business with operations in the USA and Canada.

Later as co-owner of the Invicta Partnership, he built a strong reputation as a business improvement and turnaround specialist, transforming major businesses in the automotive, utilities, healthcare and food processing sectors; helping to raise largescale investment funding and facilitating MBOs, MBIs and IPOs to secure the future of the client businesses concerned.

Much of his time currently is devoted to the development and growth of Liberty Industries Group following Liberty’s acquisition in 2015 of most the former Caparo Industries UK steel and engineering businesses. Dr Dawson had overall responsibility for this business for five years in his position as Chief Operating Officer of Caparo Group’s worldwide operations.

In recognition of his impressive and sustained contribution to the industry over more than three decades, Dr Dawson received an Alumni Achievement Award for Engineering & Industrial Management in 2014 and an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering in 2016 from Glasgow Caledonian University.
